How would you spend 7 weeks in SEA?
Ideally I'd like to spend 4 months or so in SEA, but because of my job I'm only able to visit for 7 weeks. When I travel I like to spend longer periods of time in each place to get a sense of how life is there, rather than moving on every other day to the next sight. I'm flying into Bangkok mid January and am currently trying to figure out if I should just stick to Thailand or try and include another country in my trip. I'm interested in exploring off the beaten track, and I'm not much of a beach person, so I probably won't be heading south from BKK. That leaves me with a lot of options though.
I like cities, so I'm thinking I'll stay in BKK for a week and a half or so while I get over jet lag and enjoy some night life and all of the other things I have no idea exist there yet. Then I was thinking of heading up to Chiang Mai for another two weeks and exploring the surrounding countryside on motorbike. That leaves me roughly 3 weeks. I'm considering spending maybe two weeks of that time in the north of Laos, and then leaving the final week open to whatever I want to do, but I'm also open to spending the entire 7 weeks in Thailand.
I really have no idea though. I spent a month traveling from Southern to Central Viet Nam a few years ago and that felt a bit rushed tbh. I know this all comes down to personal preference, but what do you think?
Thanks for any help you can give.
