Fake ticket inspector at Budapest-Keleti tried to scam me but my laziness foiled his plan... please help me figure out what the hell he was trying to achieve
My partner and I had just boarded a train from Budapest to Vienna. A plain clothed 'officer' approached us, flashed an ID card and asked to see our tickets. Now, usually we would find this suspicious as all other ticket inspectors we had encountered on inter-city trains had been in uniform and only asked for tickets once the train was moving, but there was a glitch on OBB's website which allowed us to upgrade to first class for only 3 euros so we thought maybe they were calling us up on that and kicking us out of first class.
Then the fake ticket inspector rushed off the train with our tickets 1 minute before departure and motioned for us to follow him. We couldn't be bothered moving so we just sat down and waited for him to come back, knowing that if he didn't make it in time, we had our online tickets anyway. The doors closed and we left the station and it was only then that we realised he was attempting to scam us... but we have no idea what he was trying to do. I've searched all corners of the internet for similar scams but I cannot find anything. Our two theories are that he would either make us miss the train and offer to rebook for us and run off with the cash, or hope that we leave our luggage on the train while we chase him, leaving our unattended luggage on the train with some accomplices.
Has anyone experienced something similar or know what he was trying to do? Please help, it's been bugging us for weeks!
