Everyone keeps asking me how I afford to travel so much. I'm basically hearing them say "how much money do you have?" - How do you guys handle this question?
I travel a lot. I just got back from 6 months abroad. Now, every day in what seems like every single conversation from friends and family to complete strangers or old coworkers, I'm asked
-
how did you budget?
-
did you make money while traveling
-
how did you afford to travel so much
-
how much does a trip like that cost
-
how much did you spend
-
did you keep within your budget
-
what was your budget
-
blah blah blah
I'm getting fed up. First it's not an easy question to answer. I usually direct them to my blog post on how to travel for free/cheap. But sometimes that's not enough.
The other thing is that I can't answer that question so easily. First, it's personal. It's money matters. And I don't feel comfortable explaining the history of my bank statements. Second, there are dozens of variables into play. There is no easy answer unless I was rich. And if I were, wouldn't that be personal financial info too?
Most of the time, I get the sense that people don't really want to know. They're just being nosey. Like if I asked someone with a Porsche "how did you budget to buy this car?" But I don't care for a Porsche, or even a car. I'd just be asking to be nosey.
What do ya'll think?
