Don't ever fly on China Eastern Airlines - Traumatizing experience.
Don't ever take China Eastern Airlines- I had such a God awful experience with them going from Seoul -> LAX (layover in Shanghai).
First of all, their online experience is terrible and nothing works. I can't change my password because it says I need a code that has been sent to my email but it arrives like 5 hours later (or not at all). Since nothing works online, the check in line was like 1hr 30 minutes long in Seoul since everybody has to check in at the counter.
THEN my first flight from Seoul -> Shanghai was delayed by 6 hours (hung around the airport for 9 hours, did a tour of all the lounges on my Priority Pass) - so when I got to Shanghai to take my LAX flight it was already 12:30am.
The airline said they would get me a hotel but when I asked them which hotel it was they just replied "it's a chinese hotel, you wouldn't know" and looked annoyed/pissed (btw it was called Handsome Hotel so not sure why he was being such a dick) and then ignored me. Nobody at the counter could speak english really well and was rude throughout and yelled at everybody in Chinese regarding any of the questions we had about our connections/lodging situation. It was literally like the DMV only worse because they don't understand anything you are saying and you are also paying their shit airline.
My travel insurance kicked in at this point already but I didn't have a Chinese phone (so couldn't call hotels to check for vacancies (online only allowed for 2pm check in)) or Chinese money (it was already 4:30am at this point - took them 4 hours to get people their new flights/hotels because they were working so slowly!) so I just went with the airline's hotel choice because I was too tired to care.
THEN they shipped us to this roach motel like 40 minutes away that costs 30 dollars a night. I was told that I would get my own room before I got on the bus. They made me share a room with a complete stranger and the hotel wouldn't give me back my passport until check out time. The hotel was old and dirty... Soon as I turned on the lights on at the hotel I saw 2 tiny roach scurrying by so the stranger and I slept with the lights on. The airline didn't provide any food/food vouchers and they didn't give us any more instructions. We were pretty much on our own after getting to the hotel. I got on the bus in the morning that was falling apart with a terrible driver who was driving really recklessly.
I got to the airport like 3hr 30m earlier than my check in time because I figured the check in line would be worse. AND IT WAS. It took me 2hrs+ to check in alone and the employee was incompetent - he had to ask his coworkers for help for like 20-30 minutes. He wouldn't explain what was happening and ignored me although I kept on asking him about what was wrong.
So I finally got through with all the check in/security stuff 3 hours later. The plane was delayed by 30-40 minutes before boarding. Finally got on the plane. Then we were stuck on the plane for 3 hours before it finally left the airport.
It took me like 48hrs+ to get back home (should've been an 18 hour journey) and I wasted more than 1 day being screwed by this airline. NEVER AGAIN. I'm more surprised this airline is part of SKYTEAM.
TLDR: China Eastern airlines is rude as fuck and they stuck me in a roach motel with a complete stranger on a layover in Shanghai. Their delays turned my 18 hr flight into a fucking 48hr+ ordeal.
