First Time Roadtripper - Is this plan practical?
First, a bit of background. My 3 person family is planning on roadtripping from Philadelphia, PA to Albuquerque, NM leaving mid December and returning after New Year's. Timing is a bit flexible but I expect to spend about a week driving there, stay in ABQ for a few days, and then head back.
I'm borrowing my parents' Artic Cat truck camper for this trip and plan on camping as much as possible on the way there and staying at a site the entire time we're in New Mexico. I plan on travelling down through Virginia till we hit I-40 and take that through to NM. I'm hoping that because we're fairly south, winter weather won't be too much of an issue and temperatures will be above freezing for most of the trip.
Now for my question... As I'm researching the route and places to camp for the night, I'm finding that most of the sites I'm interested in will be closed for the season. Ideally, we would stay at national and state park campgrounds but most seem to shut down in Nov. Should I look at places that cater specifically to RV's or are there campgrounds out there open year round, and I'm just not looking hard enough.
I fully admit I'm a total noob here, so is this plan in any way practical? Any suggestions on websites or apps that will help me plan would be appreciated as well... I've used a few apps so far, but none have been very helpful and there are so many out there it's a bit hard to know where to start.
