Where to stop between Niagara Falls and central Maine?

Planning a trip for next summer (July/August). We will make it from Illinois to Niagara in one day, then meander our way over to somewhere around Augusta, Maine to visit family.

I know very little about this stretch of land. My research so far is just giving me too many ideas to narrow it down.

Finger lakes, Catskills, Adirondacks, White Mountains… what else is worth considering?

It will be me, my wife, and a 2 year old. We love nature, plan to mostly tent camp and do a lot of hiking, don’t really care about night life or restaurants. We don’t drink, so things like wineries/distilleries are not a draw.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
