San Francisco to Florida in January
I’ll be driving from SF to Florida starting in mid-January and I’m looking for advice on route options. No schedule but I’d like to make it in around 3 weeks. I’m driving a 2007 Volvo station wagon (front wheel drive) and will have cold-weather camping gear with me.
I’m looking to camp in a few NPs and find great food along the way. I prefer the one-lane US highways and seeing small towns along the way, and I’m open to ‘getting lost’ (sleeping in car, motel, taking backroads, etc) but I assume it’s a good idea to choose a general route / main highway to follow.
I’ve already done the southern route (mostly I-10) in the summer. I found I-10 to be pretty boring, but I loved big bend and would be open to taking a southern route again. Just would prefer to try something new.
I was considering taking US-50/I-70 and hitting one or two of the Utah/Colorado NPs, continuing through Kansas City to St Louis, and then heading down the Mississippi through Memphis and maybe down to New Orleans, although I’ve been a few times, so i would be open to skipping Nola and heading through Birmingham / Montgomery.
If US-50/I-70 is a bad idea for my car (even with checking the weather and being flexible enough to wait out storms), I could also go down US-395, hit Yosemite and/or Death Valley, then take Route 66/I-40 through Albuquerque to Memphis.
Any thoughts?
