NJ to Memphis and back in mid-November, advice and suggestions please.
Hello, I want to ask the community for some help on planning this trip. My wife and I intend on driving to Memphis and back in the middle of November, leaving from NJ. We plan on taking our 12 and a half year old black lab with us. He is in pretty good health but can’t really walk with us nearly as much as he once could, so we need to be able to leave him in our accommodation while going out to explore for a couple hours. Theme for the trip is Elvis, music, BBQ and bourbon. We intend to go through Staunton, VA; Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge, TN;Tupelo-Memphis, TN; Nashville, TN; Elizabethtown- Bardstown, KY. We will have 10 days. Plan on spending more than a day at certain places. The general idea is to leave NJ Thursday morning an drive to Staunton, VA, planning on taking the Skyline Drive. Next day get going early and take the Blue Ridge Parkway and then either end up in Maggie Valley or Townsend- Gatlinburg area. Friday and Saturday to explore around the GSMNP, Sunday morning leave for Memphis with a brief stop in Tupelo. One or two nights in Memphis then on to Nashville, one or two nights there as well and then move on to Elizabethtown-Bardstown for bourbon exploration. Then head back to NJ but I need an idea on a place to stop for the night to brake up the drive about half way, seems too long to enjoy it. Need suggestions on what is worth seeing and what we can skip, anything to keep in mind-weather for example, I have no idea what what November would be driving through the Blue Ridge and Smoky mountains.
