Travel Insurance Questions for Domestic (US) Multi-Family Road Trip
Next fall, we're taking a road trip from the East Coast to the Yellowstone area. Staying in hotels for the drives each way, and staying for a few days each at two VRBOs while in the Wyoming area. This is a trip with my family (two adults, three kids) plus another family (two adults, three kids). So that one family doesn't have to pay all the costs upfront, each family booked one of the two VRBOs (and we'll similarly split the various hotel costs).
Questions:

Since this trip is totally domestic and we both have great medical insurance that should cover any medical needs, we wouldn't need to prioritize the medical coverage when considering travel insurance options, correct?

The one main thing I'm concerned about is that since the trip is so far away (still about a year out), any number of various life circumstances (job changes, major illnesses/death, etc.) or world events (whatever the next coronavirus is, or wildfires, or flooding, etc.) may cause the trip to not happen. This is what I'd want to buy travel insurance for, yes?

When looking online at travel insurance options, it lets me list all the people coming on the trip and their ages. Do I actually need to do this for my spouse and children, or should I just list myself? If I paid the cost (my kids obviously didn't pay for the trip), don't I only need to insure myself and my costs? (I get that for medical coverage reasons I might want to list my spouse and children, but then see question 1.)

Even though we're splitting costs as I mentioned in the first paragraph of the post, can I insure myself for the entire cost of the trip including the parts the other family paid for? I'm thinking just I would get insurance for the whole trip cost and the other family would reimburse me half the premium.
