NY to CA in September/October
I'm about to embark on my first cross country trip, leaving NYC on September 10th to go see my brother in Nevada. I will be traveling on a class B+ RV, towing my little moped and also taking a kayak.
My initial plan was to take i-80 on the way west, i-70 through Colorado and Utah, explore some of eastern California with him, then start coming back through i-40 in mid-October. This general route was planned based on the best weather (low 70's) at this time of the year.
The plan is to sprint as far west as I can on the first few days so that I can enjoy the locations that are furthest from me. My birthday is in late September and my brother will take a week off so we can travel to one or two locations (in CA, UT or AZ or even ID) for some peaceful days before I start heading back in October.
Is there a better route than i-80 for the way there? Any beautiful spots along the route that you recommend I check out?
Please send any suggestions that you may have for me. I am interested in backroads and scenic drives, nice bodies of water that I can swim/paddle on, dispersed camping, and generally, just being sort of secluded and enjoying nature--not really thinking of hitting any large cities. I also don't need any hookups for the RV and just need to empty and refill tanks once a week or so.
The past couple of years have been super rough for my family. I lost my father and my mother was hospitalized for over a year all together. I have been on autopilot for too long, so this is my chance to step away from the intensity of everyday, try make sense of my life without my father around, practice mindfulness and acceptance.
This the most significant journey of my life, so far. All tips are welcome!
