How sketchy is it to drive an AWD/4WD vehicle over I-80 in December?
I'm thinking about visiting a few friends in California later this year and I have been thinking it makes the most sense to have my car there because the local transit is bad and I don't want to force them to chauffeur me everywhere. But even though I would plan to go about a month before the peak of the snow season and I have AWD, I've had people tell me not to drive on I-80 in the winter unless it was absolutely necessary. The other option I have is to tough it out over the Rockies on I-70 and bypass the Sierras to the south by taking 15 and 5, but I believe that route may be longer and 70 is probably even worse at that time of year. Is it really that dangerous, and if so, why is it even open during those parts of the year in the first place?
