Wildlife Roadtrip Suggestions
Hello All!
As the world slowly (hopefully) emerges from this pandemic, I'm getting the serious itch to travel (in a safe and responsible way). I'm in the Northeast, but have started toying with the idea of a road trip that is specifically geared towards great places to see birds and wildlife. With that in mind, I wanted to try to get some recommendations from this subreddit if anyone was willing to share. Here's what I'm looking at:
10 - 12 days
Absolutely no problem doing 12+ hour days. I've driven to Alaska and back, the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia to the Russian border, all over Europe, Central America, South Africa...I'm good with driving
The prettier the drive and more remote, the better, which can admittedly be a bit tougher in the east compared to the west
I've identified some spots of interest, but it's been surprisingly difficult to get real info on whether it's worth it, if there are better spots etc.
Right now I was looking at hitting the Cranberry Wilderness area in WV en route to Shenandoah National Park. From there, I would go to the Great Smoky Mountains which would involve the Blue Ridge Parkway. At that point I could then head back east to Congaree National Park in SC, up to Cape Hatteras National Seashore and then back home, maybe stopping in the Chincoteague area too.
A lot of these areas are well known National Parks, but I'm also very interested in areas that may be lesser know, off the beaten path etc.
I also was toying with the idea of stretching it, driving through TN all the way to the Ozarks, or possibly going somewhere further north, like Upper Peninsula. The problem with going to UP is that the Canadian route is obviously blocked off, and driving through parts of the Midwest can be a bit of a drag from my experience.
Anyway, any and all ideas are very welcome. I'd like to do this in as safe and responsible way as possible, have no interest in going to any cities on this trip unless I have to, and would like to try to maximize the amount of nice nature and wildlife, including along the drives.
Any ideas, suggestions, critiques?
