Seek advice — traveling around the globe by bike and driving a bike in general
Hello, r/roadtrip!
My name is Georgy — a freelance designer and developer. Basically, I create websites and apps for a living. Though, I’m started looking for clients not a while ago.
I want you, folks, to give me an advice: my dream is to travel around the globe, specifically Russia at the beginning (I’m from Russia). Then I’m thinking of traveling to many other places, but I’m aiming for China because I like the country and I’m learning Chinese. SerpentZA and LaoWhy86 are a huge inspiration for me — their “Conquering Northern/Southern China” series is amazing. Getting my hands on “Days Gone” showed me how much I wanted to ride a bike. Bikes seem to me to be agile, mobile, and way freer than cars — indeed, the latter gives more capabilities and weight carry, but bikes are shining with freedom, haha. That being said, I’m trying to be as grounded as possible. I do understand that media depiction of bike traveling might be quite different from reality.
I have a rough plan of what I need to do to achieve the goal, so I really want you — bike experts — to review my plan and give me additional tips if I didn’t cover it. Anyway, I need to get a grasp of reality, so don’t worry about being a bit too harsh with your statements.
So the plan is following:
- Get a motorcycle driver’s license
My questions on the point:
Which one should I get? Russian “A” is enough I guess for most bikes? Though, what kind of bike do I need to get in order to travel across a country? - Get some hands-on experience if I feel like I need more after a training
- Start looking for a bike in stores and second-hand
My questions on the point:
What bike should I get as a beginner? Is it better to buy a new one or it’s okay to get a used one? - Start looking for equipment in stores and second-hand
My questions on the point:
What necessary equipment should I get as a beginner? Brands? Used or new? What kind of additional equipment is better to get for (first) trips too? - Earn enough cash and buy all the stuff
- Start riding a bike in a city, get a hang of the bike
- Start traversing between nearby cities, get a hang of fast speeds and an open environment
- ????
- Start the journey!
What I want is to travel from city to city, sometimes stay for a long period of time in them — basically, slow travel is more interesting than traveling from Point A to Point B.
I could forget some stuff, please let me know about it.
Thank y’all for the support and replies in advance!
P.S: I would really appreciate folks from Russia or those who know stuff within the motherland. That’s because laws differ from country to country. I’m really interested in translating driver’s licenses to ones in other countries, specifically CIS, Eastern/Western Europe, China, and East Asia in general.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have some experience city traversing on an electric scooter — one of my mates gave it to me when I lived in China.
