12 day roadtrip starting in San Diego, ending in SF. Struggling to decide on what we should include/forego
Hi all,
SO and I are having a belated honeymoon 12 day break in California. We are starting in San Diego and need to end in San Francisco. Would love your help on what we should be including/excluding.
Couple of things: We are slow moving, so we like to relax, indulge, not fit 100000 things in 1 day. Our aim is to have a relaxing yet adventurous trip with great food and seeing some new things.
We are thinking the following:
Day 1-3: Stay in San Diego; see La Jolla, SD zoo (this is our "relaxing" part of the trip so we want to just chill, see some cool places, eat some great food, enjoy the beach)
Day 4: Head to Joshua Tree and spend 1 night there in a cabin with a hot tub. Hike in the evening and the following morning before checking out and heading on road
Day 5-7: Arrive at Santa Monica - stay for 2 nights
Day 7: Head to Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur, stay in Monterery for 1 night
Day 8-12: Head to SF, stay here for remaining trip + spend 1 night in Sonoma wine tasting
Some questions I have:
Does it make sense to do SD > Joshua Tree > SM ? Picking Joshua Tree over Yosemite due to its closeness to SD and also because we have seen Yosemite previously (though it's amazing). Happy to be recommended alternatives to JT if it makes sense route wise
Is Santa Monica fine for 2 nights? I havent been to LA before so would like to at least spend some time there, however I don't really have an interest in the "touristy" parts of it. Just figured Santa Monica would suit our needs well.
Should we consider a night stop in between Santa Monica & Monterey/Big Sur? I realise it's a 5 hour drive which would take up a lot of the day. Or should we consider stopping for lunch in Santa Barbara? Anywhere else on route that makes more sense?
We already have a hotel booked day 8-12 in San Francisco that isnt amendable which is why we want to be there for this time however we definitely want to consider 1 night in Sonoma for my SO's birthday.
With regards to car rental, we plan on using uber/lyft whilst in SD. We will then rent for Day 3-Day 8 and return the car when we arrive in SF. May consider a day rental whilst in SF if we want to head further out/to Sonoma.
