Where to road trip over the Fourth of July to try and avoid crowds?
I would like to take a road trip this summer somewhere in the United States (lower 48, to take advantage of airline companion pass) but, somewhat frustratingly since I hate traffic and crowds, this year I can only vacation over the Fourth of July holiday. I am willing / able to fly to most any airport in the continental USA and plan to rent a car and do a big loop drive or, alternatively, do a series of day trips out of that airport if the area supports it. I would probably have about 4 solid days to drive / explore and wouldn't have to worry about entertaining kids but my wife would probably nix anything that was just purely was wasteland lol.
So, all that said, where should I go? If crowds/traffic is a deal-breaker, I figure basically any coastal area is out of the question and I imagine that quite a few national parks are as well.
Some of my thoughts so far:
Northern North Dakota (fly into Minot)
Southeastern Oregon (fly into Boise)
Central Wyoming (fly into Casper)
Northern Nevada (out of Reno or Salt Lake)
Any other suggestions? Any suggestions of things to do if I opt for one of the above? Thanks!
