Road tripping cheap for a college student

I want to quickly outline the situation. I am graduating college soon and would like to take a 2.5-3 week road trip. I live on the east coast but would love to travel around to some of the national parks out west in Utah, Colorado, etc. I want to do this as cheap as possible and as a result I’d like to just sleep in a van on different BLM lands and campgrounds. That’s where the problem is. I currently own a van but I don’t trust it to hold up to all the miles I’d be putting on to make the full trip. I have thought about renting a cargo van from uhaul, enterprise, etc on an unlimited mileage plan in my home state and driving it wherever I want to go so that I can bring my supplies (I already own everything I’d need as far as camping supplies) versus flying out somewhere and renting a car there but having to pay to check or ship all my gear. I’ve also thought about paying to have my car shipped to a destination and filling it with my gear then flying a cheapo flight out to meet it so I could have my car without having to put so many miles on it driving out and back. I also have seen a company that rents out vans that are already outfitted for “van life” but I don’t know if it would be cost effective to do that considering I already own all the gear I would need.

My real question is, does anyone here have suggestions on how to make this road trip happen for the cheapest price? (Whether that’s suggestions on the cheapest place for rentals, a cheap shipping company for my car or gear, or a new approach that I haven’t thought of yet). Any input is helpful!

Edit to include more detail:

I have a 1976 VW bus that’s been converted to a 3.1L v6 (what would have been in like a Chevy celebrity back in the day). The engine had overheated and completely blown back in august of this year and I just got the replacement in in mid December. That being said I haven’t had much time to fully test it out because I broke my foot in early January and have been unable to drive since then (but I will be cleared to walk and drive again in the next few weeks!) while it is a brand new motor it hasn’t really been tested and it’s also in a pretty old vehicle so that’s what makes me nervous about a high mileage road trip
