[PA-CA]Worst (safetywise) cities on a cross-country road trip?

Gonna be road tripping from PA to CA on a move sometime in May. I've plotted out the route from east PA, up by Cleveland OH, along the IA/MN border and just south of Chicago IL. We plan to catch some shut-eye in Iowa City, then go through Nebraska towards Denver and take another extended rest. After that, head towards SLC Utah, try to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way in the desert, and then rest in Fernley Nevada just before Reno- which will be our last parking lot nap before heading to our destination.

What are cities, towns, or just general areas you'd suggest not stopping in, even just to stretch your legs and fuel up, or nap in a Walmart parking lot? Also are there any areas that tend to have major backups due to rush hour traffic on a frequent basis?

Searching around Google and Reddit for info, people seem to equate "worst" with "most boring" and that's not really what I'm after, lol. I know Gary, Indiana is a big one a lot of people seem to agree on.
