PA -> CA 1st time road trippers (advice?)

Hey guys!

Me and my friend are planning to go on a spontaneous road trip from Philadelphia to California, specifically wanting to spend some time in San Diego and then drive up to Yosemite National Park.

(Trip details below)

Tentative date: Embarking April 5th around 10:00 PM.

We’re not renting a car, as he recently got a brand-new 2021 kia sorento which is nice and spacious.

We have 3 weeks total to spend, and he’s great at driving long distances without needing to stop much.

We’re thinking of leaving on a Monday night and arriving at our first stop in Memphis Tennessee to spend the night before we continue on the road.

Our second stop would be in Texas, and our third New Mexico. I’m not exactly sure which cities yet.

We were hoping to stop to sight see in Arizona on the way back, but generally just focus on making necessary stops to arrive back to Philadelphia.

Background on us:

I’ve been to San Diego for a week when i was 15, but i only stayed in Oceanbeach and wasn’t able to go off on my own.

My friend has never been off the east coast. We both are going into this as first timers!

Also, we’re both lgbtq, so if there’s anything we might benefit from knowing in that regard i appreciate it!

Lastly, we’re both night owls, so night time driving is no issue.

Does anyone have any advice on the following?

  1. Is 3 weeks sufficient based on the details provided? (Like I mentioned, the road trip is more about getting to the main destination of California rather than making longer-than-necessary stops along the way, rather just stopping to sleep and head back on the road)

  2. Is Yosemite worth the drive from San Diego? We would find a place nearby on airbnb to stay for a day or two to have enough time to enjoy the park.

  3. How much money would you recommend we have to have a comfortable trip? (We’re frugal- We plan to bring most of the food we’ll eat in prepackaged containers, stuff you don’t have to cook.)

  4. We’re vegan, do any other vegans have any cool spots they recommend we check out?

  5. Are there any safety precautions we might benefit from taking?

  6. Any advice for enjoying a road trip that’s mostly driving rather than plenty of stops? We thought of audiobooks, music, and conversation games.

  7. Any tips to save money that aren’t well-known? (Also, any tourist traps we should definitely avoid in San Diego/Yosemite/anywhere along the way?

  8. Any suggestions on route-alterations?

  9. Any advice on spending long periods of time with another person and making it as bearable as possible? (We get along quite well, but we haven’t spent this much consecutive time together before)

Those are just some off the top of my head, but I appreciate anyone even just responding to a few or giving other advice.

Thanks for reading!
