US winter driving etiquette
I’m a born and raised California but I’ve also been living in Hokkaido, Japan(think Alaska of Japan) for the past 6 years. Everything I’ve learned of winter driving comes from my years here. I’ll be heading back to the states permanently come August and will want to try my hand at winter road trips as soon as I can. The list below are things I’ve learned being in Japan. Is there anything not on the below list that I should be aware of when driving in the states in winter?
- switch to winter tires/winter wipers in Oct
- stick wipers up w/ u park and know snow is coming
- be cautious at entrance and exits of tunnels(more ice) * acceptable to run through a red light if you know you don’t have the stopping distance to not slip
- be cautious on bridges as they’re more slippery
- stick to the lane that’s been plowed
- don’t use your handbrake
- carry necessary gear for when you get stuck
- drive slow as they don’t salt the roads
