San Diego -> Seattle -> Denver -> Chicago
Made a throwaway because I have not been keeping the plans of this roadtrip secret from friends and look forward to sharing some cool pics with the community once underway. Anyways I'm planning a roadtrip one way from San Diego to Chicago late March through early April but planning on taking the scenic route and taking my sweet time with it. Haven't been to the mainland (currently in Hawaii) since covid hit and I understand different states are different levels of locked down.
I'm planning on camping or car camping as much as possible with some hotel nights thrown in, but I know most campgrounds are shut down so I'm thinking either stealth camping or parking lots if I must. Never taken on a true road trip and looking forward to it, I've only ever driven distance to make good time A to B. For the first time in my adult life I don't really have a time hack I have to make so I may adjust as I go and just go where the road takes me. Planning on stopping at a lot of national/state parks along the way for sight seeing and some hiking as long as they're open.
I drive a 2015 Jeep Patriot which has enough room for me to lay down in the back if I move the passenger seat up. Also have camping gear and a lot of camping experience. I'm not very acclimated to the cold right now but I'm from Chicago so I know how to live and drive in winter conditions. Just got 4 new tires for my car and it has no mechanical issues.
Any advice on or input for the sleeping arrangements would be much appreciated. Funds aren't much of an issue but I'm not planning on being extravagant either. Also, advice on areas to avoid due to covid or covid restrictions would be welcome. I've been doing my own research but it can only take me so far, some first hand advice/experience would be awesome.
