Hi all. I got great confidence and empowerment from reading everyone’s reports and advice last summer and eventually did my lockdown socially distant cross country trip and all went amazingly well including not catching covid and yes doing the mandatory quarantine upon re entry to NYC (we take covid seriously and I played everything by the book as much as I could altho obviously traveling per se was not exactly the best thing to do but still, ok, we did it safely)

Since I am planning another stealth trip this February, this time with the addition of our beautiful Aussiedoodle pup who we want to let loose in Sedona dog park (a basic dream but a good one to aim for)

(If by the powers of the immigration gods I can get my drivers license renewed whilst I await my visa renewal...(I’m British expat))

I’m all watery eyed about what my wonderful son and I achieved together this summer and would love to share. I’m a single mom, so it was just me driving each day and putting up the tent each night whilst my son ‘rested’ 😂 and tried to find WiFi 😩 but the memories last a lifetime. I also fell in love with my adopted country. I hope to inspire others.

Our route was as follows:

Day 1. NYC to PA to pick up my son from his Dad PA to Marengo, Ohio, to a farm campsite.

Day 2. Marengo Ohio to Macoupin county, southern Illinois: an animal sanctuary offering camping on their grounds.

Day 3. Illinois to Lake of the Ozarks and Osage beach for lunch (we’d just watched Ozark so it was kinda work the detour). Another farm campsite in Edgerton MO that night.

Day 4. MO to Kansas (Manhattan, albeit a very different Manhattan to that we know ha ha) we stayed on a kind of bush skills education site! Very cool.

Day 5. We break the back of the flat parts of the Midwest and whoah, the most amazing amazing farm campsite in southern Nebraska in a place called Gering!

Day 6. Nebraska into Wyoming via Cheyenne, and then across the snowy ranges pass into Colorado. The most beautiful day of driving ever. Tears were shed on the snowy pass! Night 6 at a glamping location in Steamboat Springs CO.

Day 7. CO to Utah!! Overnight at a remote but amazing campsite in the Canyonlands NP.

Day 8. Canyonlands down to Zion. Overnight at an rV park next to Zion.

Day 9: Vegas baby. Hotel. Didn’t like it after being in so many scenic locations queuing for coffee with non mask wearing covid deniers wasn’t to our liking so we left early and drove back to Utah to Zion and hired a cowboy cabin for a few nights of R and R. No more queuing for coffee!

Day 13. Zion to Riverton Wyoming to an awesome ranch. Again we were alone camping very safely and had a wonderful time.

Day 14. Cody Wyoming. My son is a Kanye fan. But didn’t make the link. Shucks.

Day 15. Cody Wyoming to badlands SD.

Day 16. Hotel overnight in Milwaukee.

Day 17. Milwaukee into NY and quarantine!!
