Medium-altitude stop for trip from SF Bay Area to Santa Fe
I’m taking a short road trip to NM - Santa Fe and Taos - from the San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve never driven through AZ or NM before, and I’m excited! I’m also a bit worried about the altitude. I have a health condition that makes it harder for me to adjust to high elevations, plus, because of the dense wildfire smoke of California, my lungs aren’t in peak shape at the moment.
We’re planning to take I-5 down I-40 (via 58), and stay on that almost the whole way. Our initial plan was to go pretty fast and stop in Barstow and Flagstaff.
When and where along the route does the elevation increase? Will I be at high altitude through most of AZ and NM on the way to Santa Fe? Is there a decent place to stop along the way—better than Barstow + Flagstaff—where I could give my lungs a break before heading up into altitude? (Note that it can’t be in the Central Valley due to the smoke.)
Thanks!
