Looking for suggestions near Texas
I have until the 27th from now to visit a friend out in Austin, TX. I currently live in Milwaukee but I'm struggling to figure out a good path to make a good road trip in that time. New job starts September 1st so need to be back to deal with all of that.
Any suggestions of things to see along the way there / nearby? Big Bend NP has been on my list, but honestly the last time I drove through Texas, Missouri, and Illinois in August, it was a bit miserable. Unending flatness, corn, and truck stops. Might have been more interesting if we'd stopped at cities (Tulsa, Kansas City, St Louis) to see museums / drink with the locals but a) I'll be alone this time and more importantly b) trying to avoid humans / cities because covid.
I have a list of cool things I'd like to do in Arkansas but I'm not looking to do them alone (mountain biking, rock climbing, etc). I'm mostly looking to car camp, sight see, hike, hammock, read books, and see national parks. Open to through hiking but need a bear bag and a lighter tent. BLM / free camping if possible. I'm all in on stupid tourist attractions that can be appreciated from a distance / anything you'd find on atlasobscura.com.
Alternatively, I have a lot of time - I could just venture further west and finally see the grand canyon. Plenty of Arizona and New Mexico to explore. Rockies & Colorado too.
