A road trip into the Heart of Italy - Abruzzo

With my family, we usually spend 3 to 4 weeks in August travelling all around Europe. We are from Italy, almost the centre of the continent and so we have easy access to other countries. This year we were planning on going, with our campervan, in Danemark, but thanks to the current event we had to scrap that idea completely, so we decided to spend all or vacation days touring Abruzzo, a region sometimes called “The Heart of Italy”, and is also infamous for the disastrous earthquakes of 2016 and 2009.
Our first stop in Abruzzo was the National Park of Abruzzo Lazio e Molise, right in the middle of the region, so full of nature you didn’t know where to watch to not be surprised by a gentle doe eating leaves or galloping wild horses. Truly a magnificent place. We stopped at Villetta Barrea, “Il borgo tra I Cervi” ( the village surrounded by deers), and it truly was! There is even a small and spartan camping (were COVID guidelines and rules do not exist, so we stayed there for only one night) were deers walk among the tents and the vans in the evening, a beautiful experience.
Whilst being in the part we managed to do some walks in the wilderness, following bear tracks to “Passo dell’ Orso” (Bear Pass), in Val Fondillo, but we were unlucky and didn’t see any bears.
To make up for it we managed to hear wolves howl for three nights in a row on our way to Campo Imperatore (Emperor Camp) one of the biggest plateaux of Italy and the biggest of the Apennines, with an altitude in the range of the 1700m to 2000m, and often used in cinema. From there, there was an incredible view of the Gran Sasso, the highest mountain of the Apennine range.
In the end, we travelled, only in Abruzzo, visiting only nature and some of the smallest villages, for almost 2000km, for approximately 19 days.
It was a good holiday to spend with the family and made me realize that to see beautiful natural sceneries I don’t really need to travel to Norway, but I can find them even close to home, in the Hearth of Italy
A travel video I shot during our road trip to Abruzzo, Italy, just to give you guys some insight into the beautiful scenery we saw: https://youtu.be/byS92fWFPjI
