Driving from Detroit to Acadia National Park, where should we stop?
We are leaving August 7th. We can't take the route through Canada, so it will be a 16.5 hour drive, and we have plenty of time to split up the drive so I wanted to stop about halfway and stay in a place in upstate NY.
I was thinking Ithaca, Saratoga Springs or Watkins Glen because they aren't too far out of the way but someone suggested we venture north to the Adirondack Mountains because they are absolutely beautiful - but this would mean me and my boyfriend would drive approx. 12 hours in one day and almost defeats the purpose of splitting it up.
Does anyone have experience with upstate NY / the Adirondack Mountains and do you think driving 12 (possibly 13, because I know traffic and other conditions could easily add an extra hour) hours in one day is even doable?
We could split up the drive into 3 days, but that seems like a little bit of a waste of time especially seeing as we will be delaying going to a much more beautiful national park (sorry NY, you're gorgeous too).
