Trip report MI-WY-UT-MI June 2020
Haven't seen many of these so thought I would post. Two adults and a child, June 2020. We traveled from MI through IL, WI, MN stopped for a day in Badlands NP South Dakota before going onto Wilson WY for 4 days. We visited Yellowstone and Tetons. We then went to Moab UT for 3 days to visit Arches and Canyonlands before driving back across CO, NE, IW, IN and home to MI. Trip took two weeks. We stayed primarily in airbnbs. We had two hotel stays.
Now, what I know everyone wants to know. How is it out there? Depends on the state. Illinois was very masked up, not eating in resturaunts, folks kept their distance when we took a walk on the lake shore. Wisconsin, South Dakota, Colorado, Nebraska were like nothing had ever happened. It was bizzare and we stuck to our airbnbs and got food at drive throughs.
Jackson Hole/Wilson wasn't too bad. We avoided downtown Jackson. Too many tourists without masks on all piled together. Resturaunts were open, but most had moved to outdoor seating and has limited indoor seating. Employees were not wearing masks. Yellowstone and Tetons were fairly quiet for June. Only place we couldn't visit was the Prismatic Spring due to the parking lot being full. People wore masks for the most part in crowded areas and tried to keep six feet between groups. Tetons was even more empty. (We practically had Badlands NP to ourselves by the way)
Moab was another mixed bag in terms of mask wearing. Employees wore masks, but tourists didn't unless the store or resturaunt provided them. We bought groceries and made meals at the Airbnb there since the resturaunt situation was worse than Jackson. Canyonlands was empty, but that's pretty normal this time of year. Arches we only spent a few hours in due to the heat. It was fine. No masks, but everyone stayed really far away from each other on the Windows Loop trail. Took turns climbing under the arches etc.
Colorado Springs was also like nothing happened.
Iowa was very similar to Michigan. Masks everywhere. Most resturaunts still doing drive-thru only.
We drove through MN and IN so can't give any info there.
Overall we felt safe on the trip. We had masks with us at all times and had hand sanitizer as well. We avoided resturaunts without outdoor seating or reduced capacity. I was very happy with how things went inside the national parks. I really thought that would be the worst place's to visit, but they ended up being the best. We're at home quarantening until we get our covid tests back. Yes we took tests the day after we got home, it was super easy and if you travel I 100% suggest you take one when you get back.
