As the title indicates, I'm looking to drive from NYC to LA and back. The purpose of the trip is to see the country and I have about 30 days in total.

My question: has anyone done a roadtrip like this recently? If so, I'd love to glean some information from you. Specifically, the route you took, places you stayed, restaurants you ate at, difficulties you encountered and things you wish you knew before you left/would have done differently.

Ideally, I'd like to drive 4 to 6 hours a day and stay in cheap ass motels along the way (with the possibility of doing some camping now and again).
