Just finished my first cross country road trip yesterday...
Route & general descriptions
- Day 1: DC to Davenport, IA. Kind of long. Kind of boring. All kind of looked the same to me.
- Day 2: IA to Golden, CO. Stopped in Des Moines and Lincoln to see the capitols of these states. Not much else to see tbh. Got pulled by a cop in Omaha for
having a rental car with New Jersey platesfollowing a non-existent car too closely. - Day 3: Golden to Big Water, UT. This is where the trip got to be amazing. Stopped at many places along the way in CO. Denver was a bit less interesting than I thought it would be. Lobo Overlook (continental divide) was very cool. Got gas before entering Navajo Nation and just drove through to see Ship Rock in NM and Monument Valley from the north. It was dark by the time I passed over the Glen Canyon Dam Bridge.
- Day 4: Big Water to Ogden, UT. I wanted to see the Great Salt Lake and see the bison on Antelope Island and was not disappointed. I also stopped in SLC which was nice. Lots of people protesting about religion or something. Antelope Island was one of my highlights of the trip. I will definitely go back to Utah.
- Day 5: Ogden to Bend, OR. I went across Idaho, stopped to see Boise (meh) and didn't find Idaho all that different than Eastern Oregon so basically stuff I have seen already. In Oregon, I took Highway 26 up to see the Blue Basin, Painted Hills and Strawberry Mountains. Much better than taking 20 to Bend.
- Day 6-7: Bend to Portland. I am from Oregon and I am here to see family so this part of the trip is old hat. However, I was able to snap some great pics of Mount Hood from 26.
Overall, the trip was very amazing. I am going to be in Oregon for the next couple of weeks and plan to drive back either north through Montana or south through Southern California and across from there. It was made up of long days of driving but the truck (Ram 1500) was comfy and better on gas than I expected (21.9 mpg avg over the whole trip). Plus podcasts and SiriusXM helped a lot.
Here is a quick 15 photo album of the highlights. I will post more in a longer album on the same profile. https://imgur.com/gallery/yxjAeiJ
