Planning a road trip from Oregon to Alaska, what do I need to know?
Assuming that the situation chills out and the US-Canada border opens up by early summer, I am planning a road trip from my home in Oregon to somewhere in Alaska (no particular destination there, just want to explore the state). I’m planning on leaving in mid-late June, when I’m finished with college for the semester. I will be traveling over 5,000 miles round trip, and it will be my first long road trip alone. I’ve been doing some research on driving the Alaska Highway, but I would like to hear from anyone who’s made the journey before. The following are questions I’d be interested to hear input on, some of which is just general road trip advice and not specific to this trip:
I will be driving a 20 year old Toyota mini van that I’m going to have fully serviced before departure, will this be safe on the roads in Alaska?
Assuming I stay in some designated campgrounds along the way, is it reasonable to assume they won’t be completely full in late June-early July?
Are there decent spots along the highway to pull off and camp for the night if not at a designated campground?
What are some road trip essentials that might not be too obvious to bring?
For the portions where I’ll be in Canada, do I need to get cash and exchange it for Canadian currency, or will I be able to use my debit card like I normally would?
What should I be aware of while traveling alone? (For context: I am a 20 year old male if that is relevant)
Feel free to give me your take on any of these questions or offer any advice you think might be relevant, I would really appreciate it.
