Cheaper to rent vs Drive own car on 3200 mile trip
Currently planning a 3200 mile road trip in the US. It's going to be a out and back Loop from my hometown. One of the things that I've been struggling to figure out is whether it is cheaper to rent a car versus putting all the miles onto my personal car. My car is and good reliable shape and is around 35k miles. Going off all the cost per mile calculations I can find online for my vehicle( 4 year old compact SUV) they cite a cost per mile of anywhere from 40 to 80 cents a mile which would mean that I would expect $1-2k in depreciation, and maintenance costs which would make the $350 rental a no-brainer.
But I realize that those calculations are flawed when looking at it for a road trip as a lot of that is also factoring age depreciation as if you are driving those miles over the course of a normal use schedule, rather than mostly the mileage and the accelerated maintenance required when you put on that many miles in a short period of time. Looking at doing the trip over 9 days and from what I can find I can get a car for 350-400 assuming my existing auto insurance covers me for driving the rental( is this common practice for most Insurance?)
TL;DR: Wondering if anyone has a better method to estimate the mileage cost of driving my vehicle 3200 miles.
