Advice on where to find hills/mountains when living in Chicago
Hi all! My wife and I are looking to plan a long weekend trip in the coming weeks and any ideas would be graciously received. We are new-ish to Chicago, from the north east and are missing hiking with real elevation gains. We are hoping to find a somewhat remote location, maybe a cabin settled in some hills that isn't too busy so our black lab can run free and we can soak in some nature.
Looking to stay within a 5-7 hour drive so have been looking at places like:
- Missouri - Ozarks, Mark twain forrest area
- Sourthen IL - Shawnee National Forest area
- Indiana - Hoosier National Forest area
- Northern Michigan - Sault Ste. Marie State Forest area
- Northern Wisconsin / Deluth ND area - Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
I haven't been to and know much about these areas outside of preliminary google searches. Any suggestions on which towns to look into or any other locations you would recommend? Would love to hear of some great experiences others have had then just tossing darts on my google maps board.
Ideal criteria:
- Dog friendly
- Remote w/mountains/hills
- quaint downtown close by
- Lake/river/water close by
- Not completely shut down due to cover :)
