Turning SUV into Camper vs. Buying a Camper Van

So I am going on a month long road trip through the U.S in October. I have a 2014 Honda CRV, and we were thinking about turning it into a camper temporarily by taking out the back seats and building a platform bed. This seems to be the cheaper option compared to buying a used camper van, but there are some things I'm concerned about.

  1. That it will severely run down my car. This is my and my husbands only car as we will be selling his soon, and I'd like it to last for another year at least.
  2. Space. Turning it into a camper will be doable, but a bit tight since we'll have to store things in the car as well.

If we were to buy a camper van, we'd have more space, could use it for future trips, and wouldn't really have to worry about it being run down because that is what it is made for. The upfront cost of the van would suck (I'd pay in full, I wouldn't want payments on it) and the gas mileage would suck.

I would appreciate some opinions on this as to which one seems like the better option, and if you have any experience with converting your car or owning a camper car that would help.
