San Fran to LA/SD August PCH Trip

Im sure this specific trip is asked about alot. But I've read a couple old posts about it already, still looking for suggestions. Plan is to drive San Fran to LA/SD over the course of 10 days (8/21-30) sticking to the PCH mostly. With 10 days I expect we can spend a couple days at each major city (SF, LA, SD). Big Sur, Monterey, and other places on PCH were are planning stops. Is there any advice you would give us? For example, when sleeping overnight on PCH and we're not at a big city, could we just sleep in our car? When we get to major city's hotels/Airbnb's will be booked, but trying to minimize lodging elsewhere.
