San Francisco to Denver
Me and my partner plan on doing a 14 day road trip from SF to Denver this May.
It's a long journey and I know we're packing a lot in, so any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. I love driving so I'm not adverse to driving a bit further to enjoy a more scenic route.
If there's any sights etc. that you think I'm missing out on I'd love to know and likewise anything that you feel should be cut out due to time pressure. Route suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The key sights we'd like to see are Yosemite, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon, and we'd even be willing to cut time spent in Vegas to spend elsewhere.
Our rough itinerary for the trip is as follows:
Day 1: Arrive in SF at 11am, check in and sightseeing
Day 2: Sightseeing
Day 3: Sightseeing and pick up hire car. Drive to Mariposa (~3hr Drive) and stay overnight
Day 4: Mariposa to Yosemite NP(~1hr 15m). Hiking then stay overnight.
Day 5: Death valley through to Vegas (10hr drive total, across 2 days, 8hrs if the pass is open), overnighting along the way, where depends on the route we'll take. However, this is where I'm unsure . I'd like to take the 120 through the mountains but I think the road will still be closed in mid may. An alternate route would be great, ideally I'd prefer to avoid the highway in favor of a more scenic route but I don't mind. This day I'm allocating a lot of driving time
Day 6: Arrive in Vegas. Sightseeing
Day 7: Sightseeing.
Day 8: Vegas to Grand Canyon (~3hrs), unsure of the best way to access it though? Hiking and staying overnight
Day 9: Head from Grand canyon to Grand Junction(~10hrs total). Unsure of the route to take, either I-15 which would take us to Zion where we would spend the rest of the day, or through US-160 by way of monument valley
Day 10: Arrive at Grand Junction, Overnight.
Day 11: Grand Junction to Denver (~5hrs)
Day 12: Day trip from Denver to Rocky Mountain NP
Day 13: Sightseeing in Denver
Day 14: More sightseeing and fly home in the night.
