California to Texas (the West) and back. Dec 21 - Jan1st. Need recommendations for that Americana experience and life style
So here's a little back story. Once I married my wife (she's from another country located at the other side of the world), I suddenly became infatuated with the west, route 66, and finding little enclaves of the past / ways of life we don't see anymore. I think I started to see things through her eyes in what makes America VERY unique. I even took her father on an all American road trip across American before he passed away from cancer. We got him boots, a cowboy hat etc. He absolutely loved it and even tried to sneak off to swim across the Mississippi river.
Anyways, I was born in Texas but I live in Los Angeles. In this city, what's on TV, and the things influencers post on online doesn't reflect a majority of America. Because of that we've been doing this sort of road trip every year for the last 4 years but this year we've made time to actually stop at as many places as possible and really soak it in.
FYI, we're in our early thirties. We are really interested in seeing people's way of living whether it's rough, slow, leisure, biblical, etc. We'll even goto a rough biker bar. WE just want to see something very different than Los Angeles. This means parades, car shows, truck shows, rodeos, small towns that seem to be timeless visually, diners, ice places. My interests is people oriented places. I'm not so much into landscapes but if there if something is worth checking out, we'll check it out. I mean I still haven't seen monument valley or white sands.
I'd love to also hear what to avoid. We don't want to be trapped for hours in a cave tour or something.
So far on my list (I'm going to add and cut things out)...
-Great salt plains, Oklahoma
-Monument Valley, Arizona (definitely)
-Buffalo Chip Saloon Arizona
-Skipping grand canyon. We've seen it many many times.
-Forth Worth Stockyards
-Conoco Tower Station, Shamrock Texas
-Tulsa Brady District (Maybe)
-The ghost town at Texola
-neon signs at Tucumcari (maybe)
-Oatman Arizona (mining town)
-bagdad Café in Newberry Springs (maybe)
I'd love to see if there is a little racing derby to watch or something. I remember seeing a few when I was a kid around Mesquite. We're going to try to catch a rodeo in Arizona and/or Forth Worth.
Please help me out and hopefully this post will help someone in the future too.
