Road trip from Missouri to SoCal for Christmas - tips?
My parents moved out to California for their retirement some time ago. I helped my mom move out there, but flew back. For us, it was fully a 3 day trip, but my mom can't drive for very long, and we also had a huge car packed full of stuff, an old dog, and an anxious cat. According to google maps, from where I live it should be 25 hours to get to my parent's, if I were to drive non-stop.
My SO and I would like to drive there this Christmas with our dog, who is younger and overall okay in the car provided we wear him out when we stop for gas. I'm hoping to make it there in a day and a half. Spend a week and a half, and drive back. We simply cannot afford the plane tickets to where my parents live, as Christmas is the busy season for their city and they are expensive. Plus my dog would love to see the desert and goes on hunger strikes when we leave him.
My biggest fear is going over the mountains in Arizona in December. When my mom and I went, we got lucky and there was barely any snow. But I don't know if that's standard. I wish I could sort of tentatively plan what days to travel and go when the weather is good, but I need to give my job more of a specific notice. Is this something I should be more or less worried about? I definitely don't want to get stuck in the mountains or something over Christmas.
We would also like to, if possible, save on money and time by sleeping in the car. Our back seats fold down, and while we don't have a big car, with a foam mattress topper I think we could barely survive one night. Is this a completely bad idea? This is not something we've ever done before.
Any other tips to help us get there? My biggest worry is the weather really.
