Planning a really big continental US road trip, picking up and leaving a rental car at the same location. Do rental cars truly have "unlimited miles"?
Hi, folks! Long time lurker, first time poster!
I'm planning a big road trip around the US for early 2020. I haven't really seen much of the US, so I'm really looking forward to it!
I have a car of my own, but I don't think my mid-00s Corolla (bumping up against 200,000 miles!) could survive this trip, since it's nearing the end of its life. So I've been looking into how to get my paws on another car!
I've been looking into car rental services (I've never used one before), and a lot of people have talked about renting a car in one place, going on a long road trip, and then leaving the car at another location. Not only does that sound extremely expensive, because of the high drop fees, but it doesn't work for me, because I still need to get back home!
What surprises me is that it looks like there are a lot of car rental services that would let me rent a car for over three weeks (I have a full 25 days free that I plan on spending traveling) for about $1,100-$1,200, and with "unlimited miles"! Is that... is that correct? Is there a catch there, or is that literally "You can drive this car wherever you want, as much as you want, between when you pick it up and when you return it"? My (extremely tentative, but it's a good start!) itinerary shows that I'd be driving just over 12,000 miles during this trip, and that's just to get to each individual point!
Thanks in advance, pals! I'll pay you back with pictures from my trip after I go on it!
tl;dr: when I rent a car from a car rental service and it says it has unlimited miles, is it... is it *really unlimited? For real? For real for real?*
