Driving Chicago to Salt Lake City -Pointers?
I will be packing a car with my belongings and moving to Salt Lake City at the end of the month. It will be my first trip across the country, and I will be myself driving.
I'm not super worried about the drive itself since it looks like I can just take the I-80 all the way. I'm already planning snacks, water, a bag of clothes for changing, etc. And I'm always paranoid of running out of gas, so I already never go past 1/4 left.
Is there any recommendations for how often I should stop, even for a few minutes? How do I find good places to sleep, especially safe ones since my car will be packed. Should I plan on a hotel?
My plan is to leave later friday night, drive the 5/6 hours to Omaha maybe get a hotel for the night and sleep a few hours. Early saturday morning drive to Cheyenne and maybe get another room or anything to give myself 1-3 hour break of driving before finishing the last 6 hours or so to Salt Lake City.
Should I split my trip up more? Anything I should include or need to think of?
Is there any parts of I-80 I need to be weary of?
I honestly have no idea what I'm doing and have had really only 2 days so far to start making plans and about another week to finalize plans.
