Solo Road Trip Through The 'Boring' States

First off, absolutely no offense meant to any of these states. I live in the default punchline city of all media. I just think it's funny (and I know us 'middle of the country' people have a sense of humour about our homes).

I have 'visit all 50 states' on my life list and I thought it might be fun to knock off a few I would likely not travel to for a specific vacation. My general itinerary is:

  • Winnipeg - De Smet, SD (about 8 hours) - sleep in a covered wagon on the original homestead of the Ingalls family (This is literally the only plan I have so far)
  • De Smet, SD - Omaha, NE (4 hours)
  • Omaha NE - Topeka, KS (3 hours)
  • Topeka, KS - Denver, CO (this is 8 hours but I'll probably stop midway - any ideas?)
  • Denver, CO - Cheyenne, WY (2 hours)
  • Cheyenne, WY - Mount Rushmore, SD (4 hours)

I'll probably head home after Mount Rushmore unless there's somewhere close to the border of Montana that might be worth it?

I'm anticipating being away for about 2 weeks and I'll probably keep it pretty loose, but I'm trying to figure out how long I should plan on staying in each place? I usually like doing more 'touristy' kinds of things, seeing museums, kitschy things. I feel like there's the most to do in Omaha, Denver and at Mount Rushmore, but how long do you think I should anticipate staying at each place? Any tips? Is there anything fun in Topeka that I'm not finding?
