Since most onsens in Japan don't allow tattoos, I'm thinking of staying at a "private" onsen. Anyone tried it?

Okay, let me elaborate. I'm planning a trip to Japan next winter and from all the information I can gather, most onsens do not allow tattoos, and I have a very visible one. I also heard the culture is changing in Japan slowly, but in the meantime I don't want to ruffle any feathers. So I was wondering if anyone has experience with visiting an onsen? I came across the option of going for a private onsen and it actually seems pretty appealing, except for the fact that it's way more expensive than the typical public option. The ones I've checked out so far on booking . com have been around the $300 per night range. I guess I'd have to make sacrifices on other parts of my 2-week trip in order to afford doing 1-2 nights in the private option, but I can't help but think that if I don't go to an onsen I'll be missing out on one of the "quintessential" Japanese experiences. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide! via /r/solotravel https://ift.tt/2l5EbTO
