First ever solo trip to Honduras

Hello everyone! I just got back from my first solo trip to Honduras! I spent a week there.I flew into Pedro Sula, took a bus to La Ceiba, and from there took the ferry where I spent the remainder of my trip in Utila. Excluding Copan Ruins and the Pico Bonito National Park, there isn’t much else to see in mainland Honduras.San Pedro Sula was quite an experience for me. Everyone stared at me. It was quite unnerving as if they had never seen a foreigner before. There were also armed guards outside all the stores, hotels, etc. I didn’t go out much out of my hostel other than to eat and go to an atm. I certainly wouldn’t recommend going outside at night.I took the Cristina bus to La Ceiba the next morning . I would strongly recommend you only use buses in the morning or afternoon. Buses traveling at night have been stopped on the road and robbed by gangs.Like Pedro Sula, La Ceiba really doesn’t have anything to offer. It really did prove to me that Honduras is still a third world country (Run down streets, large piles of trash on the sidewalks, etc). Around 17:00, I walked two blocks from my hostel to grab some food. When I was walking back with my food, a man approached me and with my basic understanding of Spanish I realized that he was asking for my food. I said “No, Sorry” It was at that moment he pulled out a sheathed knife and showed it to me. Was it real? I’ll never know. At that point he was starting to get the attention of some nearby locals and I simply walked away. He did not follow meUtila was definitely the highlight of my trip. It is definitely much more welcoming to foreigners than Pedro SuIa or La Ceiba. I stayed there for four days at a hostel owned by one of the Dive Centers.. Unfortunately I did not take a open water course. How ever I plan on doing that when I come next time! If you are interested in diving I would definitely recommend Parrot’s dive Center or Underwater Vision. via /r/solotravel https://ift.tt/2FY5Hdv
