AU / NZ solo trip

Hey all, looking for some advice on an extended solo trip I'm planning for November. Destinations: Australia, New Zealand, and a possibility of a SE Asian country if affordable. This would be my first solo trip, but I want to make the most of it and challenge myself a bit.My friend is studying abroad in Gold Coast, AU, so I'd ideally like to fly into Brisbane, but open to other suggestions in order to have the most efficient transportation options to Gold Coast. I'd only stay a week or so to visit my friend and see the sights. Also willing to make a side trip to Great Barrier Reef since I don't anticipate it being around for much longer (sigh). Hostel or couch surfing advice would be greatly appreciated! From there, I'm considering WorkAway or WWOOFing for a short term (two to three weeks) in New Zealand. I've read a lot about the lack of transportation, so I'm looking for personal experience as to how people have gotten around in the past. In addition, I haven't a clue about how to determine going to North or South Island. I'd love to do plenty of hiking, visit or work on a winery, and do lazy days at the beach. I've heard good things about Nelson and Wellington, but pretty open to any suggestions! In total, I'm planning to be gone roughly 4-6 weeks. If my budget allows, I'l consider any neighboring SE Asian countries, but haven't really got a clue where to start researching. For the majority of the trip, I'll be traveling solo so access to internet, safety, and fairly public transportation are a must. My budget would be around $1500, not including airfare. If anyone has any experience with these locations or situations, please share! Thank you! via /r/solotravel https://ift.tt/2NtkbZd
