(Vent) Racism and sexism in my shared Airbnb

For context, I am a 24 year old white female traveling through the American South on my first solo trip. When not staying with friends, I’ve booked rooms in shared apartments/houses on Airbnb, all with female hosts. Currently I’m in South Carolina, and I was under the impression that the Airbnb host was the occupant of this home. Instead, I arrived and found that her 20-something son lives here permanently. First strike: I waited outside for twenty minutes after our coordinated check in time (and it’s hella hot here) while I was under the impression he would be meeting me to give me a key, and the host hadn’t replied to my question about getting a door code in the meantime. Except once I got the key code, turns out he was inside the entire time???Ok, I shake that off since I’m about to have fun exploring this new city for the few days. Everything is good, I don’t see him literally at all until tonight, when I am packing up my stuff to leave and hear the doorbell ring. My cohabitant has some friends over, which again I don’t care about, until they start having a very noticeable conversation filled with extremely racist jokes, discussions of “feminazis”, political figures (you can probably guess who they voted for), and just generally a lot of talk that made me feel extremely uncomfortable, especially since some of it had a sexual nature. It got to the point where I locked my door and texted my boyfriend and close friends about what was happening because my mind just started to race.Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? I was definitely anticipating some culture shock on this trip since I am from the Midwest and went to school on the East Coast, but I do currently live in Texas so casual racist/sexist stuff said in a drawl isn’t unfamiliar to me. This was just so awkward being that the son definitely knew I was home, didn’t say anything about having a guest over, and didn’t make any effort to stop the conversation. I have no idea what to say to the host since I recognized that her son wasn’t participating in the conversation, but also didn’t end it. I’m planning to leave extremely early tomorrow morning to avoid him entirely. via /r/solotravel https://ift.tt/2X2yDXH
