Looking to car/tent camp and spend a weekend somewhere in Eastern/Central Colorado, overwhelmed by the options!

My husband and I are hoping to spend a weekend in June camping in a tent or car somewhere in Colorado. I've been reading online and it seems like people discourage Garden of the Gods due to crowds, but we both enjoy hiking. I've never been further west than the Black Hills of South Dakota (well, I've been to Vegas and LA via plane, but those don't really count, haha) and would love to see the scenery. We'd be driving from eastern Nebraska.

Any advice/places to avoid? We are also considering stopping in Denver, thoughts on if that's a worthwhile stop? We have about 2-3 days to work with once travel time is taken into consideration.
