Cross-country in new (to me) car

Hi, I'm moving from WA to VA for my first full-time adult job. I'm going to need a car in my destination city (Richmond) and I've dreamed of doing a cross-country road trip ever since the beginning of college. So my current plan is to buy a used car (thinking 2016ish Prius), then drive to California to pick up a friend (stopping in Ashland for OSF and potentially one of the NorCal state parks/forests). Then we'll do California --> DC area (to drop off my friend who's starting work in McLean, VA) and then I'll pop down to Richmond. I have a couple questions that I was hoping this sub might be able to help with.

  1. I want to buy the car in Washington in order to use it for my road trip, but I don't want to pay for a year of Washington registration. Is it possible to buy a car in WA but register it in VA before technically moving there? I will have a Virginia address at least by mid-July but that's probably not enough time to receive plates in the mail (especially VA-->WA) and I'm not even sure that's possible (having never registered a car before...)
  2. I was searching possible routes and Route 50 came up, since it goes California --> Maryland, it seems great in terms of getting where I want to go. And it goes by some cool national parks in Utah But I was wondering how safe it is, in terms of driving, available gas stations/food stops and hotel stops. Would it be better to do part of the trip on I-40 or I-80? I'm planning to stay in hotels for safety/security reasons (I have a big budget for this trip since it'll be my sole post-college summer adventure).
  3. Any other tips/advice for the trip or route -- things to do/see along the way? I love things like "World's Largest Ball of Yarn" and I'm not looking to do too much hiking. I'm currently planning 7 days which I know isn't enough to stop and see the sights but hopefully is kind of balanced with getting to my destination. I enjoy driving and I'm planning to take breaks in order to get more miles done each day.

Thanks for any/all advice. Especially about the car registration!
