Student Visa and Proof of Onward Travel
I am currently planning for a semester abroad in Barcelona. It is 90+ days so I am required to get a student visa. I booked my two-way flight (American Airlines) and plan to leave August 24 for Barcelona (for traveling a week before my program starts). I am applying for my visa through my program and am about to send in all my documents. However, this has brought up several problems. I was just informed that I will not be receiving my visa and passport back until August 26, which is obviously after I leave the U.S. I have already applied for a second passport, which is currently being processed, so the problem lies in my visa. My return flight to the U.S. is December 15, so the big problem is that I will be attempting to enter the Schengen zone in August initially without a student visa.
I have come up with a plan to get around this problem and I was hoping to get some input on its feasibility.
- Fly to and enter Spain and say I am there for vacation/travel only.
- Vacation in England (a non-Schengen country) and fly back to Spain once my family has shipped me my visa.
- Enter Spain with my Student Visa.
This plan (to me) seems pretty solid, but I have several questions:
- What are the chances I am asked for proof of onward travel from American Airlines/Anyone at the airport before I fly to Spain? I'm worried that not having a visa and having 90+ days before my return flight will prevent me from boarding.
- What are the chances that I am asked for proof of onward travel upon my first arrival in Barcelona?
- If I book a plane ticket out of Spain to England for travel before my academic program, will the airline/Spanish Immigration accept this as proof of onward travel even though I have a plane ticket out of Barcelona in December?
Thank you all!
