Scuba diving trip to the Red Sea - should I spend a few days in Cairo?

Hello solo travellers,

I (30f) am planning to do a liveaboard trip this autumn in Sharm El Sheikh. I'd like to see more of Egypt, but I'm wondering if it would be safe to do so as a solo woman who doesn't have extensive experience travelling solo - I've been to the east coast of the US (NYC, Philadelphia, Albany), the PNW, Hong Kong, as well as all over my home country (China). This will be the first time going somewhere where I don't know the language or culture.

Originally I was going to fly into Sharm, do some diving on the liveaboard, and fly out. But it feels like it would be a missed opportunity not to see more of Egypt while I'm here and besides, I don't know when I'll get to come back again.

So I'm thinking of flying into Cairo and spending a few days there, before flying out to Sharm. Would this be a good idea? It feels like a waste to not go and see all these unique and amazing historical sights while I'm here, but on the other hand, I'm worried because I've heard about people's bad experiences in Cairo with touts, scams, harassment, etc. And I know it's not the most progressive country when it comes to gender equality. Should I hire a guide? What sites should I hit up, and what is overrated in your opinion? Is there anywhere in the city that would be safe to explore alone? Where should I stay?

Any advice in general would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.
