Just finished my first solo travel to Iceland!
(24/M/USA) Got back this morning from 10 days in Iceland, my first solo trip, and it was great (mostly)!
Here are just a few pics. http://imgur.com/a/UYgnmkb
My plan was to 'ball on a budget' because of how expensive Iceland allegedly (and actually) is. I'll break down some elements of the trip below!
Sleeping: My plan was to camp most days and Airbnb at the start and end of the trip. This ended up backfiring because my tent was shite, and it was cold and windy for it. I ended up sleeping in my tiny car most days and getting more Airbnbs than planned.
Food: So here's where I just got silly. I brought most of my stuff (PB, jerkey, canned chicken, Clif/Kind bars) but bought a few things (Jelly, bread, ham). This is literally what I ate everyday. To say malnourished is putting it lightly. One day I judt bought canned peas and carrots and ate that. By the end of the trip my stomach was not having it haha. But I really wanted to save money and I was just bumming it, so I didn't mind so much. Food is REAL expensive over there and I only ate out maybe twice? Akureyri Fish and Chips was great, highly recommend.
Activities: I did the entire ring road (counter clockwise), and the peninsula. I was moving pretty quickly but I did a LOT of stuff. The last few days really sucked because there wasn't a lot to do in the North activity wise. It's like a wasteland up there. Not a fun time, so I just blazed through it. Day to day I did some variation of hiking. One day I got caught up and accidentally went on a crazy treacherous 3 hour hike. That was enough for me, haha.
People: Like they say everyone speaks English there, even fellow tourists! It was awesome being able to hear about other people's adventures. If you do the ring road there's a chance you'll see the same people MULTIPLE times. I ended up running into these two friends so often that we ended up spending a day together, really great!
Money: Didn't use cash once. You probably should take out some to use restrooms in gas stations if they charge (like 200Kr.) but everyone and their mother takes cards. Pretty cool. Stuff over there is also really expensive. Not cool. Getting a burger and fries anywhere was like $18 USD. I never did that business, but to each their own.
Sights: The waterfalls! I thought I might get tired of them but wow. Each one has its own personality and unique touch. It's also amazing how hugeee everything is. Makes you feel so small!
Other:
- Skyr is overrated, it's just Greek yogurt. Skip on that. I'm a candy guy, so I tried lots of candy if I could. This stuff is devine. Buy this. It's like chewy chocolate with licorice in it. They love their licorice.
- Don't turn on red. Also don't speed. There are only cameras near Reykjavik and in the tunnels, but it's not worth it to risk it.
- Get a sim card at the little shop in the airport near the exit. It was like $30 for 10 Gee Bees of data and it was plenty. No text/talk though except for domestic.
If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask! I'd include my itinerary but I ended up deviating from it HARD. I got really ahead some days and changed it up a lot to accommodate. Also the Google Pixel 3XL camera is INSANE. That's all I used the entire trip and I was amazed!
