Heading for Reno, only worried about one stretch of road.
Anybody take the road from Mt Shasta to Susanville, CA lately?
The wife and I are firing up the Hemi-powered chariot, and heading down to Reno, NV from the Seattle area in a few days. There is nothing like a little asphalt therapy to help shake the dust off, and we try to make a couple good trips each year.
This year, our destination is Reno, NV. We'll be using Reno as "base camp" for excursions over to Tahoe, Virgina City, Carson City, etc., plus where ever else we find interesting along the way.
There is one stretch of road that I am a little leery about. We're planning on turning off of I-5 in Mount Shasta, and taking SR89 Eastbound. After a nice scenic ride through the woods, taking a left on SR44 at Old Station takes us right down in to Susanville, and on to Reno.
However, in preparation for the trip, I popped over to CalTrans' site to check road conditions and found this:
SR 89 [IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA & SIERRA NEVADA] NO TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS ARE REPORTED FOR THIS AREA.
[IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA & SIERRA NEVADA] IS CLOSED FROM THE LASSEN VOLCANIC NAT'L PARK SOUTH BDRY TO THE JCT OF SR 44 /LASSEN LOOP/ (TEHAMA, SHASTA CO) - FOR THE WINTER - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE
Now, I just want to make sure I am reading this right, as I've only been through there on the 89 once, and it was rather quick, and in late summer. Is this advisory talking about the area farther south of my route, down around Lassen Peak?
Trying to get a gauge for the road down there, and the road being closed would definitely have us taking an alt route down through Redding. Going through Redding adds about 90 minutes to the trip, I think so not out of the question. We both loved the route from Shasta to Susanville, and would prefer to go that way.
