Anyone who has solo traveled in East Africa, would you mind giving me an idea of your budget and what that got you?
I've got another two or three months of stamina for traveling left and I really, really want to go to East Africa. But there are so few resources online, and while I can afford a short trip on paper, I know there are always hidden costs and I don't want to be caught out.
If you've been, could you tell me what you spent, where you went, and what sort of travel that was (hostels, hotels, group tours, etc.)
My priorities are Ethiopia for the Danakil Depression and Tanzania for Kilimanjaro, although I understand these are big-ticket items. I am currently in Spain and I still need a yellow fever vaccine, but otherwise I'm ready to leave whenever (or I can chill in Europe for a month or two more, if it makes sense to do that). Ideally if I leave now I'd like to spend no more than 5k USD but I can go up to maybe 9k, but I really don't want to. I will need to fly home to the US when this is over. If I stay in Europe for an extended period of time I'll be cutting into that budget, but I'm traveling super cheap here right now so I'm not exceedingly concerned.
Also interested in Rwanda, Kenya, possibly Zimbabwe if I can get that far south... but Ethiopia and Tanzania are priority. Definitely do not want to go to DRC, I know the gorilla trekking is great there, but that's not a huge deal for me and it's not worth worrying my family.
Anybody want to weigh in with their budget, and where you went/what you did? Or any other recommendations or things that stand out, open to feedback. Thanks guys!
